Our Goal
Street Law Open Drive is being developed in full alignment with RCW 46.82.420 and WAC 308-108-155, the legal foundations of commercial driver education in Washington State.
Our goal is to have Street Law Open Drive listed as an official approved curriculum option on the Washington State Department of Licensing’s Driver Training School Curriculum Submission Form.
Our long-term vision is to continue building a self-paced LMS-based version of Open Drive for authorized online use.

Community Collaboration
To ensure the program is relevant, accessible, and effective, we are actively seeking input and support from:
- Driving instructors and school owners
- Local and national safety commissions
- Teen driver awareness groups
- Traffic safety researchers
- YouTube influencers in the driver education space
- News outlets and journalists covering teen safety and traffic trends
We also welcome requests to use third-party educational content (videos, infographics, and articles) to be integrated with full credit and permission into the Open Drive platform.
Where We Are Now
The Open Drive curriculum framework, Drive Lab modules, and teaching model have all been designed with DOL compliance in mind.
We are currently:
- Developing the full digital curriculum package
- Preparing documentation and a detailed lesson-by-lesson alignment guide showing how each state-required topic is covered
- Collecting input from stakeholders across WA and beyond
The Goal
The goal would be to ensure any certified school in Washington can adopt Open Drive as a ready-to-use curriculum option—without reinventing the wheel.
The goal is simple: Once approved, schools using Open Drive would not need to create their own curriculum. They would simply submit our flowchart and indicate their intent to use Open Drive on the official DOL form.
If a school chooses to make changes to the curriculum, they must submit those modifications independently for review and approval by the DOL—using the appropriate forms and following DOL’s established protocol
Looking Ahead: Self-Paced Model
We are closely monitoring legislation that would allow for self-paced traffic safety programs in Washington State. If passed:
- Open Drive will continue development toward full certification as a DOL-approved, WordPress-based Learning Management System (LMS).
- Self-paced modules would still require alignment with all required RCWs, WACs, and standards.
As regulations shift, we are committed to staying compliant, responsive, and ahead of the curve.
What Happens Next
Once the full package is complete, we will:
- Submit all required documents and flowcharts to the DOL
- Engage in direct review and revision with DOL representatives
- Publish approval updates on this page so you stay in the loop
