SEARCH: Student Parking Lot = Chaos From Every Direction After-school dismissal requires constant 360° scanning. Students sprint from blind spots behind parked cars. Buses block entire sight lines. Your SEARCH must cover: between every parked car, behind buses, near athletic fields, and band room exits. One missed scan = one collision with a classmate.

Student Behavior Patterns
PREDICT: 3:15 PM = Predictable Chaos Students don't walk - they RUN to freedom. Predict every student is distracted (phone in hand, earbuds in). That backpack between cars? Will step out without looking. Athletes in jerseys? Heading to the field without checking. Parent in pickup lane? Will back up suddenly. The gravel dust cloud? Someone speeding who can't see you.
OPTIONS
Escape Routes in Tight Spaces
OPTIONS: Limited in a Gravel Parking Lot Gravel lots eliminate emergency options. You can't swerve on loose gravel - tires lose traction. You can't brake hard - you'll skid. Your ONLY option is SPEED CONTROL BEFORE the hazard. Drop to 5 MPH when passing parked cars. Stop for groups. Create 2-car buffer behind buses. Position CENTER of lane for escape space.
TIME
Slow = More Reaction Time
TIME: 5 MPH Gives You Life-Saving Seconds At 20 MPH on gravel, you need 40 feet to stop. That student stepping out? You'll hit them. At 5 MPH, you need 6 feet. Now you have time. RCW 46.61.400 requires speeds allowing stopping within half your visibility distance. With dust/cars, visibility = 20-30 ft. Math: 30 ft ÷ 2 = 15 ft = 5 MPH max safe speed.
