A Major Shift in Driver Education

Passed by the House 71-26 and Senate 38-11, ESHB 1878 dramatically expands driver education requirements in Washington State. Effective July 27, 2025, this law ensures comprehensive training for all young drivers.

The Statistics That Drive Change Washington State Traffic Data

Currently, 18-year-olds can get a license without formal training. By 2031, all new drivers ages 16-21 must complete comprehensive driver education.

The law includes financial assistance for low-income families and partnerships with tribal communities to ensure equal access to driver training.

Funded by: $10 permit fee increase, $15 license exam fee increase, and speed camera revenue.
